As a leading educational institution in Taiwan, the Department of Tourism at Shih Hsin University provides high quality education to current and future professionals with the distinctive curriculum and outstanding faculty. The Department was founded with the mission of training professionals in tourism industry with solid foundation in theoretical and practical in business fundamentals with management of tourism industry. The Department of Tourism provides both undergraduate and graduate degrees, including the four-year Bachelor degree, the Master of Science (MBA) degree, the Executive Master of Science (EMBA) degree and a continuing education two-year college degree.
The Bachelor degree program is comprised of two specialized major area of tourism management: The hospitality management major is intended to provide a premier learning environment that prepares students to be leaders in a hospitality business. Students will study the management and operation of hospitality businesses, including lodging and food service establishments. The travel and recreation planning majors is focuses on issues related to the tourism management and recreational planning. Students can take a combination of tourism and recreational planning related courses or choose courses that focus on one of these two areas. Travel industry courses cover travel business/airline operations; and sustainable tourism, management of information systems in tourism business. In recreational planning courses, students will gain an understanding of the characteristics and importance of recreational environmental planning and design ; planning and management of national parks; tourism planning and resource management; rural tourism and recreational area and local attractiveness.
In order to gain hands-on, front-line and possibly management experiences to complement students’ area of studies in the classroom, internships provide excellent opportunities to evaluate and analyze classroom education in the laboratory of the real world. Students in the hospitality field are engaged to have their internship in the Shih Hsin University Convention Center. Meanwhile, students majored in the travel and recreation planning are encouraged to work off-campus institutes such as the Tourism Bureau on the center or local government, National Park, theme parks or travel agencies or airlines.
The master's program’s main academic direction and focus are on planning and operational management in the tourism industries. The Master degree program is designed to provide a specialized education through coursework and research to master a broad and sophisticated set of interdisciplinary skills and knowledge. Students spend their first year learning the principles and theories of tourism management strategies through a variety of fundamental courses. The second year is spent customizing their degree through the completion of elective courses. Students develop analytical abilities and the critical thinking skills necessary for careers in the travel and tourism industry. Given the program’s focus, students are expected to engage in understanding and execution of rigorous research activities which could also lead to further advanced education.
The Executive MBA (EMBA) program is closely parallels the MBA curriculum content. A total of 36 credit hours is completed during this degree program. Classes are uniquely scheduled to allow working individuals to participate with maximum convenience to themselves with classes meeting every Monday to Friday evening. The program seeks highly motivated managers in the tourism industries who want to increase their managerial knowledge and acquire the abilities needed to assume broader business responsibility.
